Wings over Ta’ Qali

Primarily, this open day is about flying model aircraft, but the Air Squadron of the Armed Forces of Malta and the helicopters that were used for the Malta-Gozo services also participated. As the association only occupies what was previously the threshold area of runway 13, only helicopters can land there. Any fixed-wing aircraft that are invited to perform simply make low passes over the site, before returning to the airport.

Held annually since 1993, Wings over Ta’ Qali also differs from the Malta International Air show in that it has never adhered to a particular date of the year. At one time, mid-April to early May seemed to be the favourite part of the year, but they have now changed to mid-late October.

14th edition, 28-29 October, 2006

Held in near perfect weather conditions, the Wings over ta’ Qali open day once again featured a line up of aircraft models of various shapes and sizes, together with a day long display of flying skills. Also featured was a line up of vintage vehicles.

As in 2005, adding spectacle to the show was a pyrotechnic display, with model aircraft “bombing” enemy “tanks”.

Another well established aspect of the show is the “toffee-bombing” run, with specially modified aircraft dropping amounts of toffee, and children allowed to run out and grab whatever they can.

Other displays were by a Savannah microlight, 9H-UMJ, (not seen by this writer), and a series of low-level beat-ups by two of the Air Squadron’s Bulldogs.

As in real life aviation, there were a couple of crashes, but no damage to life or property. All in all, a good day out.
