The following are a list of aircraft I believe to have been on delivery, and compiled from various sources. For a number of movements recorded in the sixties & seventies, the date is when the aircraft was logged at Luqa Airport.

Anyone who can confirm which of the following aircraft were delivery flights or not is welcome to contact me with details.

21.06.55 DH Heron Exchange Yard ZS-DLO Re-fuelling stop on between 11:45-13:45, arriving from Lydd to Johanesburg. c/n 10478.

01/02.06.50 Percival P-50 Prince 2 Shell Oil G-ALJA c/n P50-03. Landed at 18:00, departed for Cairo at 08:40. Re-registered VR-SDB 27.07.50. Aircraft again seen in Malta with VR- reg between 05/06.08.52, from Beirut to Nice (and onto the UK?). Owner is listed as Sarawak Oil Fields Ltd.

Avro 5   G-ASSO On delivery to Kenya, see history next column. There are anomalies in the history of G-AASO. It was first registered to AV Roe & Co Ltd in November 1929 and gained its CofA on 10.03.30. In May 1930, it was reportedly being operated jointly by Air Taxis Ltd and Airwork Limited. Then in August 1930 the registration VP-KAH was reserved for it by Wilson Airways Ltd in Kenya. It was registered to Wilson (but as G-AASO) on 05.09.30 and the Kenyan marks were never taken up. It is presumed that it continued to operate in Africa under UK marks, although it isn’t known why. On 30.03.31 the stationary G-AASO was stuck by Vickers Victoria J8920 which was landing in a cross-wind at Heliopolis. It was repaired but ultimately damaged beyond repair in a forced-landing near Broken Hill on 18.01.32.

Departed Croydon 14.10.27 [with Mrs Keith Miller] for Australia; crashed on take-off Muntok, Batavia 10.01.28; repaired at Singapore and flight restarted 13.03.28; arrived Darwin 19.03.28. UK Registration G-EBTU belatedly cancelled 02.12.30.

Re-registered in Australia as G-AUTU [C of R 206] 30.05.28 to Capt William N Lancaster, Sydney; named “Red Rose”. Sold 22.06.28 and registered 03.07.28 to R.A. Charlton, Sydney. Re-registered 11.01.29 to J.R. Palmer, Sydney. Damaged in a ground collision at Mascot, NSW on 10.08.30. Re-registered VH-UTU [20.09.30] to same owner. In 1931 it was the winner of the Coffs Harbour Pageant Aerial Derby. Registration lapsed 28.01.32; registration restored 01.11.32 to same owner.

Avro 652A Anson C19   G-AKDU Owner listed as The Secretary of State for the Colonies. Arrived for a night stop between on 06 -07 .10.47, 15:35 -06:10 . c/n 1423. Although not listed in the Customs records, the web site, http://britishaviation-ptp.com/avro652_3.hml, states “2 aircraft ordered from A.V. Roe & Co. Ltd., Chadderton, Lancs., to contract 6/Acft/1595 for Southern Rhodesia and fitted with spraying gear for locust control. First flew in September 1947.”
Avro 652A Anson C19   G-AKDV Owner listed as The Secretary of State for the Colonies. Arrived for a night stop between on 06-07 .10.47, 15:35-06:15. c/n 1424. Although not listed in the Customs records, the web site, http://britishaviation-ptp.com/avro652_3.hml, had this to say “2 aircraft ordered from A.V. Roe & Co. Departed on the 26th at 07:12. c/n 6116, pi 43-35616, HB178. http://www.silvercityairways.com/fleetl_listing_2.htm has this aircraft as Purchased by Britavia on 13.02.50. Sold to Northern Rhodesia on 14.08.50. Customs records describe this flight as delivery. The Air-Britain volume British Civil Aircraft Registers 1919-1999 gives the aircraft re-registered VP-RCA 11.50, canx 14.08.50. D18S Libyan American Oil Co. N1827D Arrived from Benina, Libya on 29.07.62 14:20 departing afterwards for Rome. Flight number given as Ferry 1. c/n A-827. Later re-registered as N486F, and seen at MIACO at Hal-Far.
18   N2500 On delivery to Australia. Arrived on 19.10.08, departed on the 21st. D18S Volpar. Built in 1951 and spent the last three years being restored at Bruntingthorpe UK. Aircraft converted to tricycle undercarriage configuration.

D-18S Bell Aviation ZS-BVT Night stop between 09-10.05.50, landing at 16:05, departing at 08:20, from Rand, South Africa to the UK. c/n A-401. This aircraft was registered to R. Paul Weesner as N1828M on 20.03.50, so this was most probably a delivery flight.
AT-11   N69574 Night stop between 30-31.08.56, landing at 20:30, departing at 11:05. Arrived via Keflavik & Blackbushe, for Juba, Sudan. c/n 3239. Operator not listed in Custom records, but http://www.warbirdsdirectory.goodall.com.au/beech18-production/beech18-part-1.pdf gives it as Aero Survey Corp, outfitted for magnetometer mineral aerial survey work. Also registered as ZS-CFN to African Surveys Ply Ltd. in 1957.

DH.86A Express QANTAS VH-USF Arrived on 10.01.35 at 17:00 from Croydon via Marseilles and Naples. Departed for Benghazi the following day at 07:20 c/n 2310. VH-USF was delivered to Qantas Empire Airways in January 1935 and given the name "R.M.A. Melbourne". It was impressed into RAAF service in 1940 as A31-6. Although in military uniform it was operated by Qantas throughout the war. It crashed during takeoff at Blackall, Qld on 9 July 1944. The wreckage was acquired by MacRobertson Miller Aviation in February 1945 who restored it to health, only to prang the bloody thing again some four months later at Geraldton, WA. DH.86A Express QANTAS VH-USG Arrived from Croydon on 03.11.34, staying between 11:09-12:52 departing for Benghazi. c/n 2311. The D.H.86A model was a two pilot variant of the original single pilot D.H.86. Six were ordered for Qantas. Two left the U.K. by air and four were shipped as deck cargo. Unfortunately VH-USG was totally destroyed at Longreach in central Queensland on 15 November 1934 while on the final stage of its delivery flight. All crew members were killed in the crash. Investigators expressed concern at apparent defects in the forward pin post; posing the question that a failure in that component caused its loss. Further investigation revealed that VH-USG had been loaded with a spare engine in the rear of the cabin, and that one of the crew members was in the lavatory in the extreme aft of the cabin when control was lost. It was theorised that the aft center of gravity condition that thus existed resulted in a loss-of-control at an altitude insufficient for recovery (the aircraft was at an estimated height of 1,000ft (300 m) prior to the crash. After landing on Hubli's runway in rain at about 19:15L (13:45Z), the aircraft veered off the runway coming to a stop on soft ground with a collapsed left main gear collapsed. There were no injuries, but the aircraft received substantial damage to left hand main gear, propeller and engine.

On landing at Jabalpur at 19:30L (14:00Z), a herd of 30-40 boars strayed onto the runway prompting the crew to attempt averting the animals by turning left. The aircraft went off the runway and came to a stop on soft ground with the left main gear collapsed. There were no injuries, but the aircraft received substantial damage. Three dead boars were recovered from the runway.

Originally only listing DC-3s (and a couple of DC-4s), research at the National Archives at Rabat, Malta, has also unearthed DC-2s and DC-6s as having been delivered through Malta, thus the change in the section title.

Although commonly referred to as “DC-3” and “DC-4”, the examples listed in this section were actually built as military aircraft, the C-47 (DC-3) and C-54 (DC-4) respectively.

Going West

In searching the net for Pyramid Airlines, I came across the following on www.sunshineskies.com.

”Nancy wrote: I flew for PBA from 1982-1988. I was a sightseeing pilot in PVC the first summer and then flew F/O on the EMB-110, DC-3, Martin 404 and YS-11. I flew Captain on the C-402, DC-3 and YS-11. I have some fun old photos of the YS-11 in the Pyramid Airline paint. I was lucky enough to be one 4 PBA pilots who went to Malta and ferried the 4 YS-11's back to the US in May of 1984. I'm not sure what type of photos you may be interested in, if any, but I'd be happy to scan a few and send them to you. I'm a 757/767 Captain now for UAL, living and based in Chicago. Love your website, thanks for keeping the PBA history alive.

I flew as F/O in N219P. The other three were N187P, N159P and N924. They all got new N numbers for PBA. The P probably stood for Pyramid Airlines, but it worked just as well for PBA. We departed on May 26, 1984 from Malta to Ciampino, Italy. Over the next five days, we stopped at Zurich, Switzerland - Southend, England - Stornoway, Scotland - Reykjavik, Iceland - Sondre Stromfjord, Greenland - Frobisher Bay, NWT - Septile, Canada - Bangor, ME - Salisbury, MD - Jacksonville, FL, and finally landed in Miami on May 31. 33.4 hours total.

Wing float separated/broken during taxiing at Marsaxlokk Harbour, leading to the aircraft capsizing. One fatality. Aircraft named “Star of Australia”, and was to take Maltese immigrants to Australia. c/n S.1294. Built as a Sunderland Mk IV, but redesignated as a Seaford Mk I. Allocated serial NJ202, but never taken on charge by RAF. Declared surplus to requirement, and converted to Solent Mk. III. According to http://www.aussieairliners.org/shortfb/vh-toa/vhtoa.html, although reg marks VH-TOA were painted on the aircraft, the Solent hadn’t yet been registered as such.

THE TALE OF A BLACK CAT AND A WHALE

Second aircraft to set out on a journey half way around the world was the last airworthy Short Belfast G-HLFT (c/n SH.l819) now registered 9L-LDQ. Sold to Transpacific Pty of Mascot following the closure of HeavyLift Cargo Airlines in the UK, the aircraft had been parked at Prestwick for a year. She was test flown during an eighteen minute long flight on the evening of Sunday September 14. Presumably this aerial adventure revealed no alarming snags, as preparations then went ahead to set forth on the long journey to Australia. Although planned to depart on the morning of September 16, the Belfast eventually took off from Prestwick at 1645. Climbing to her initial cruising level of 17,000 feet, the mighty leviathan tracked south over England, France and the Mediterranean on course for a night stop at Malta - an initial leg of six hours' duration cruising at 300 mph.

On the next day the Belfast headed eastwards from Malta bound for Muscat for another night stop after a ten-hour long flight. On the morning of September 18 the Belfast departed from Muscat en-route to Colombo. However, some four hours into the flight the crew had to shut down the no. 2 Rolls-Royce Tyne engine after it ran out of oil. Once the engine had been shut down, the generators then came off line, leaving the aircraft without electrical power. Fortunately, a successful emergency landing was made at Goa, and as the aircraft had a large supply of spares aboard, the crew were soon able to rectify the problem. With her oil and fuel tanks fully replenished, the Belfast took off from Goa on September 20 and then set course for Colombo, touching down there after a two hour 55 minute long flight. The remainder of the delivery flight was uneventful, with the Belfast staging to Bali in a time of eight hours 35 minutes, and thence Brisbane, with the last leg being the longest flight of the entire journey at 10 hours 10 minutes flight time. The callsign "HeavyLift 923" was only used for the very last leg into Brisbane, where the aircraft touched down at ten o'clock local time on the evening of September 21.

The Belfast's new operators wasted no time in placing their unique flagship into service. On September 25 she was ferried from Brisbane to Townsville, and on the following morning departed to Honiara in the Solomon Islands using the callsign "ASY204", signifying her use by the Australian Defence Force. Replacing a Latvian-registered Il-76 freighter, the Belfast subsequently flew daily between Townsville and Honiara in support of the Australian forces serving in the Solomon Islands. Very soon the locals were referring to Townsville as 'Belfast Central' and Brisbane as 'Belfast South'! This work continued until early November, with the Belfast then arriving in Nauru on November 5. On the next day she flew on to Townsville and then to Nadzab in Papua New Guinea. Although due to convey a war canoe on behalf of the Melbourne Casino via Cairns to Melbourne, the Belfast eventually arrived at Cairns on the afternoon of November 12 operating an Air Niugini cargo service from Port Moresby as PX2090. Later in the day she positioned back to Townsville from Cairns as "HVY927". For the future, HeavyLift Cargo Airlines has applied to operate cargo services from Brisbane to Nauru, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu with two early Boeing 727s and the Short Belfast. Hopefully we will be hearing a whole lot more about this tantalising new operation in the months ahead.
