HMCS Toronto 15-18 January 2002

On board was Sea King CH-124, Serial 12401 of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), callsign Canforce 401. On the 16th, it performed a number of flights of approx. 15 minutes duration, which included circuits on runway 24, practicing auto rotations. It departed Luqa to return to the ship at sea on the 18th. Another CAF Sea King CH-124, serial 12405, c/s Talon 405, flew to Luqa on the 27th, but returned to its (unknown) ship at sea.

HMCS Halifax 28-31 January 2002

Halifax entered Grand Harbour, staying until 31st January, and CAF Sea King CH-124, serial 12405, c/s Talon 405, again re-appeared at Luqa. It hovered over park 4, made a flight around the Maltese islands and auto rotation over runway 24 on the 29th. Another flight around the Maltese islands was conducted on the 30th. Talon 405 departed on the 31st and landed on the ship at sea.

Austin had entered the Mediterranean in July as part of the Amphibious Ready Group. It was replaced that same month by the USS Nassau.

Ship, whose entry into Grand Harbour was delayed by some six hours due to rough seas, was not open to visitors. The following aircraft were observed on her deck. As has become practically standard practice, two CH-46s, landed at the airport at 06.30 hours. They made another flight to Luqa later in the morning.

USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) 31 Jul –__ Aug 1995

Although not an aircraft carrier per se (it is referred to as an amphibious landing ship), the visit by the Kearsarge marked the first time in 25 years that a US military vessel, capable of launching and recovering aircraft, entered Grand Harbour.

When the America entered Grand Harbour, she was the first US Navy carrier to visit since the expulsion of NATO forces by a Labour Government in 1971. It was also the last visit by the carrier before de-commissioning later in August.
