Gloster Javelin

With the Gloster Javelin, we’ve really gone back in time, and thus harder to get loggings by enthusiasts.

Except for one exercise in 1966, I have no other details except for month and year. Anyone who can supply additional information is welcome to e-mail me at info (at) aviationinmalta.com

23 Squadron

Date: Exercise Blacktop, 26 Sept - 21 October 1963

Ten Mk.9R aircraft were refueled from Leuchars to Malta, whilst on the 27th another five arrived. However, of this total, seven were flown to El Adem, Libya. These returned to Malta on 8th October.

Aircraft were participating in Malta ADEX (between 17-18 October) and Triplex West exercises.

Two aircraft had to remain behind due to serviceability problems. Another Javelin had to stay at RAF Wattisham for an engine change.

29 Squadron

Date: Operation Theorem, 24 May – 13 June 1962

12 Mk.9, a T.3, a specially-instrumentation Mk. 9 from the A&AEE for tropical trials of the Firestreak missile arrived on 24 May. Two Mk. 7 Meteors for target-towing duties arrived on 12 June.

On 13 June, the squadron left for RAF Akrotiri, returning on 10 August for a night-stop, before departing for the UK.

All aircraft maintained the same formation and callsigns on both inbound to/outbound from, Malta.

Date: 15-16 October 1964

Aircraft arrived on the 12th, to participate in a Malta ADEX, the testing of Malta's re-enforcement and operation of the Air Defence System.

The Javelins had to ward off “attacks” by Vulcan and Canberra aircraft, with three Sea Venoms acting as jamming aircraft.

Details of participating aircraft still remain unavailable.

Current Status: Disbanded in December 1963. Served as Bloodhound SAM unit (Sept 65 - July 70) F-4 Phantom (Apr 72 - Mar 77) Jaguar (Apr 72 – Apr 2006) Reformed the same day, flying the Tornado GR.4 at RAF Coningsby as the Fast Jet and Weapons Operational Evaluation Unit (FJWOEU)
