The Royal Egyptian AF needed to replace the relatively large number of fighters lost in its war with Israel. The Spitfire IXs, which had remained in the inventory, were replaced during 1950-51 by twenty Spitfire F.22s which came from an ex-RAF batch re-conditioned for export.
