13th edition, 24-25 September 2005

Received the following from one of the crew of the Bf-108/Nord 1002.

Just been looking at your site, specifically the bit about the Bf108 that attended the air show this year. I was one of the three guys who flew the aircraft to Malta and back. Technically G-ETME is a Nord 1002, a French-built example of the Bf108, but as it built up of parts manufactured by the Germans during WWII we prefer to call it a Bf108 whenever we can!

As well as flying on both days of the show we also went up for a local flight on the evening of the 24th, and another local flight on the evening of the 26th (during which we beat up the site of the Aviation Museum at Ta' Qali). On both arrival and departure we performed some low passes up Grand Harbour. Sadly arriving a day later than planned meant we couldn't be 'bounced' by the Spit & Hurri!

Apparently local rumour had it that we didn't depart on Monday due to engine problems - not so - we were on the beer the night before and the weather on Monday morning wasn't exactly suitable for flying anyway. So Monday was a day to visit the museum and take a local resident up for a flight later in the day.

If you know anyone who got any good photos of the 108 in Malta (particularly beating up Grand Harbour on arrival/departure, and arriving at Luqa on the 23rd) we'd love to see them!

Regards

Damien Burke

18th edition, 25-26 September 2010

With the construction of a hangar for SR Technic on park 4, the organisers were forced to move the participating aircraft to parks 2 and 3.

As a result, the public (more accurately, the aviation enthusiasts) were able to photograph light aircraft normally out of reach of our cameras from outside the fence.

Weather-wise, the expected downpours didn’t materialise, and although there was some rain on Saturday morning, this gave way to long sunny periods with occasional cloud, but rather strong winds which prevented the Aviation Museum’s Tiger Moth from displaying. This (wind) had reduced substantially by Sunday.

19th edition, 24-25 September 2011

This years’ edition saw a number of interesting participants. From Poland, a Navy M-28 maritime patrol aircraft, whilst from the UK, the RAF’s Battle of Britain Historic Flight’s DC-3.

And for the first time, aircraft from Libya. An An-26 and BAE 146 brought VIP’s. One of the two Mirage F.1 fighters that had defected in February was towed over to Park 2, where on Sunday, the green disc insignia was replaced by the roundel carrying the new Libyan national colours.

22nd edition, 27-28 September 2014

This year’s edition saw a number of interesting first time visitor, most notable of which was the Egyptian AF NAMC/PAC K-8, with supporting C-130 Hercules. Other first timers were two Aero 139 ACLA from the Czech Republic and F/A-18 Hornets from Switzerland. This marked the first time that Hornets, other than those operated by the US Navy or Marine Corps, made an appearance.

Also interesting was seeing two P-3s – US Navy and German Marine – at the same time. Unofficially, it was three P-3s, as the USN participant needed its nose wheels tyres changed, thus explaining the visit by the third one, which brought the necessary parts. Unfortunately, it came after the airshow gates had closed, but come it did.

Another first was having three aerobatic teams, Spain’s Patrulla Águila, last seen in 1995, the Italian Frecce Tricolori and the British Red Arrows. Sadly, the much anticipated Turkish Stars cancelled their participation. A great pity, as this would have been the first time since 1969 – when four Libyan F-5s landed at Luqa - that aircraft from the F-5 line of aircraft would have been seen in Malta.

Other cancelations were by Belgium (F-16s), Greece (F-4) and Qatar (C-130).

An interesting treat was seeing a flyby by an Air Malta Airbus A.320 with the Red Arrows. See video below.

23rd edition, 26-27 September 2015

The following report only applies to the second day of the show, Sunday, as the author was unable to attend both days.

For the first time since its inception, the Malta International Airshow boasted a helicopter display team in the shape of the British "Wild Cats" Lynx team.

Another first was a display by the AFM'S Beech 200 and AW.139.

The Egyptian Air Force again sent a K-8 and supporting C-130 as participants. Again, the K-8 was surrounded by a varied example of the kind of munitions the aircraft is equipped to carry. Coming from a Middle Eastern country where aircraft spotting is non-existent (and actively discouraged, one would imagine) the crew found no objection to being photographed with members of the public, quite a number of whom were female.

Weather-wise, Saturday was the better day, practically cloudless. Sunday, although also beautiful, also had some cloud, like cotton wads floating lazily through the sky. This reminded the author, that 40 years ago, when black & white film was still in vogue with enthusiasts - local ones at least - placing a yellow filter on the lens would really have brought out the contrast between the sky and the clouds. It was also the time when you had to load something called a film in the camera, making sure the film "leader" engaged the take-up spool. After closing the back, you turned the advance lever, making sure the rewind crank turned anti-clockwise, indicating that you had correctly engaged the film. But I digress.

Unfortunately, the opening of the airshow by an AFM helicopter flying low over the runway in front of the crowd line couldn't take place this year, as the Alouette went unserviceable. I believe this is the first time this has actually happened.
